If I had another year at LSC, I would love to do the following project as some sort of Independent study:
-- Identify some of the major issues that affect students at the school right now. Things like student apathy and the like. Generating such a list shouldn’t be very hard.
-- Grab some notebooks, a bunch of change, and start sorting through the archived issues of old school newspapers kept in the Library and the Critic office*. Document the other times these issues have come up in the school’s various papers, and make copies of the good articles. I did an article on the paper’s history when I was in News Writing, and I’ve always wanted to go back to the topic.
-- Write a series of articles about these issues and the different responses to them through the college’s history. I would expect there would be enough material for a series of fairly lengthy articles.
Of course, I’m gradating, so this is just empty musing.
* I’ve always wondered if we’re supposed to do something to get the Library to archive the paper or if it was something they just do.
